About emotional intelligence
The researchers Mayer, Salovey and Caruso developed the first robust model of emotional intelligence back in the 90’s . Dan Goleman took their work and made it accessible to a wide population. They defined emotional intelligence as :
“The ability to perceive emotions, to access and generate emotions so as to assist thought, to understand emotions and emotional meanings, and to reflectively regulate emotions in ways that promote emotional and intellectual growth.” Peter Salovey and John Mayer (2002)
Their research found that emotional intelligence is a set of abilities which they divided into four areas:
- The ability to recognise emotions- in ourselves and others
- The ability to use emotions– to be able to observe, regulate and generate new emotions which best fits the task ahead of you and enhances decision making. It is also the ability to be emotionally agile and expressive
- The ability to understand why emotions arise in ourselves and other people –this means understanding each other’s goals, values and emotional triggers and understanding the goals, values and customs of the organisations and communities within which we operate.
- The ability to manage emotions –in order to deepen relationships with other people, integrate information from emotions to help us make better life decisions and live a healthy life
Their model is the RUUM model - Recognising, Using, Understanding and Managing emotions
